FAQ INFORMATION
Will I be charged for baggage?
Subject to company baggage
restrictions, a maximum of two (2) pieces of checked baggage of
reasonable size and not weighing more than thirty (30) kilos in
total, will be carried free of charge in the coach luggage bays for
each passenger. In addition, each passenger may carry two (2)
carry-on bags each not exceeding 50cm x 35cm x 25cm free of charge.
All carry-on baggage is required to fit under the seat or in the
overhead compartment.
Any extra baggage or oversized baggage (e.g.: mattress, bicycles)
will be subject to space availability and the payment of a scale of
charges, irrespective of whether or not it weighs less than the
maximum allowed weight.
To reduce the transportation cost of excess or oversized baggage,
Scandinavia Express suggest that these pieces are transported
through Scandinavia Package Xpress service. Transportation will only
occur when space allows but it is a more cost effective method of
transporting your extra baggage.
What type of shipping services does Scandinavia Express provide?
Scandinavia Package Xpress is an economical way to deliver packages,
cargo, excess and oversized baggage. Counter-to-counter service is
available from all Scandinavia Express terminals and offices.
Unfortunately, a door-to-door service is not yet available but it is
hoped to start such a service during 2005 within the Dar-es-Salaam
municipal area.
What are the restrictions on carry-on baggage?
In order to
provide all passengers with reasonable safety and comfort on board,
each passenger is restricted to two (2) carry-on pieces, each not exceeding 50cm x 35cm x 25cm. Both these
pieces must fit into either the overhead rack or under the seat of
the passenger. Passengers are reminded to keep their valuables with
them at all times. Do not put prescription medication in checked
baggage. No liability is accepted for any carry-on baggage.
What are the restrictions on checked baggage?
Two (2)
pieces of baggage are checked free of charge for each passenger.
The maximum allowable weight for checked baggage is thirty (30)
kilos per passenger. Carriage of any additional weight baggage is
subject to space availability and will be charged according to a
scale of tariff.
Baggage must not exceed 155 centimetres when adding the total
exterior dimensions of the piece - (length + width + height). Any
unusually sized or heavy items (e.g.: golf bags, mattresses,
bicycles, water skis, surf boards, towing equipment, tools) are
subject to predetermined charges depending on the item and the
distance to be travelled. Each of these items must be packed in
wood, canvas or other substantial container, and securely fastened.
Towing Equipment - Limited to 45 kilos in weight, must be enclosed
in rigid containers or wrapped in a strong material such as canvas
and securely strapped or tied. Bicycles - Must be packed in wood,
leather, canvas or other substantial carrying case, and securely
fastened.
What are considered "acceptable" types of baggage?
In
general, acceptable baggage includes suitcases, duffel bags,
toolboxes, trunks and securely-tied cardboard boxes. A plastic
and/or a paper bag is not acceptable as checked baggage. Shipping
containers are available for a nominal fee at many terminals.
Does my baggage require ID tags?
Yes. Regulations require
that each piece of baggage have an identification tag attached to
it, which must include the owner's home address and telephone
number. If your luggage does not have such identification, ask for
ID tags at the customer counter.
I'll be changing buses en route to my destination. Is baggage
automatically transferred to the next bus?
No. It is the
passenger's responsibility to retrieve luggage at the transfer point
and check it onto the next bus in their schedule.
Do I always have to transfer my own baggage?
Special handling
ID tags are also available for customers that need special help with
their luggage, such as elderly passengers, passengers with
disabilities, adults travelling with small children and children.
Is checked baggage service required on Scandinavia Express?
Yes. Apart from carry-on bags, all baggage must be checked and
weighed at each departure point. Any items that are unusual,
oversized, exceed the maximum weight or dimensions or number more
than the allowance, will be subject to an additional fee, charged at
a predetermined scale of tariff.
Are any items prohibited from checked baggage?
Yes.
Prohibited items include acids, ammunition, animals, combustible
liquids, compressed gases, corpses, cremated remains, explosives,
firearms of all types, fireworks, flammable liquids, furniture,
hazardous materials (poisons, radioactive materials, etc.),
materials with a disagreeable odour, matches, merchandise for
resale, protruding articles, or any unsecured articles including
those in plastic or paper bags.
Electronic equipment (television, stereos, etc.), film (flammable),
and perishable items (food) may be sent using Scandinavia Package
Xpress with appropriate packing.
Items such as money and prescription medication may not be checked
as baggage and are to be carried in the customer's possession
May I bring along a bicycle as checked baggage?
Yes. A
bicycle can be considered as one (1) piece of allowable luggage.
Bicycles will be transported when disassembled and contained in
wood, leather, canvas or other carrying case that does not exceed 8"
x 32" x 60" and which is securely fastened.
May I bring along water skis or surf boards
as checked baggage?
Yes, provided the item can be safely
placed into the coach hold area. Skis and surf boards are considered
as one (1) piece of allowable luggage but they must be bagged or boxed
securely.
May I bring along a laptop as checked
baggage?
No. Laptop computers are considered "electronic
items" prohibited for checked baggage. However, laptops may be
brought aboard as one of two allowed carry-on items.
What about items not mentioned above?
Check at the terminal for specific information. You may also check
the Scandinavia PackageXpress page for details on allowable items
to be shipped via our package delivery service.
I've lost a piece of luggage. What should I
do?
If you are on-board or at a terminal, please report any
lost or stolen items to a Scandinavia Express representative
promptly. Scandinavia Express has a tracing system that matches lost
bags to their owners 24 hours a day. Please fill out a tracing form
at your destination and the Scandinavia Express representative will
enter the information into our system. When a match has occurred,
the customer will be notified immediately. Scandinavia Express will
make every effort to help locate luggage; however, Scandinavia
Express is not liable for unchecked items lost or misplaced by the
passenger.
What is Scandinavia Express liability on
lost luggage?
Scandinavia Express undertakes to take reasonable care of all baggage during the journey
but does not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage to any
parcel, cargo, baggage, personal effects and valuables during the
journey. However, entirely at Scandinavia Express discretion, Scandinavia Express may assume
liability for passengers’ checked baggage carried in the luggage bays beneath the bus. This
liability will be
limited to a maximum of ten thousand Tanzania shillings (10,000/=) for loss of or damage to any item of baggage
provided that the loss or damage occurred whilst in the possession
of SESL for the purposes of carriage. The maximum compensation payable for any claim will be limited to one
hundred thousand Tanzania shillings (100,000/=). Settlement may be made in cash or cash equivalent
entirely at SESL’s discretion.
It is suggested that passengers purchase insurance in advance to cover
the value of all their checked and carry-on baggage.
How do I file a baggage claim?
All claims for loss or damage must be submitted in writing by the
passenger or the passenger’s representative
to the Scandinavia Express office of
departure within seven (7) days of departure. Claims are limited to
one claim per passenger, settlement of which
will be at the discretion of Scandinavia Express.
Any settlement will be full and final settlement for all loss or
damage in connection therewith.

with the ticket and baggage check, to:
